COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides an opportunity for students to design and carry out marine related internships, practica, research projects, or field experience on or off campus under the supervision of a faculty member and the guidance of a science mentor. It includes a project proposal, research, data collection and analysis, a final report, and an oral presentation. A project worth 3 credits is required for the Marine Option Program (MOP) Certificate. The course may be repeated any number of times for credit.
Prerequisite or Corequisite: OCN 101
Recommended preparation:NONE

HOURS PER WEEK:  1-6 Credits, 3 to 13 hours as follows:

1 credit = 3 hours
2 credits = 5 hours
3 credits = 7 hours
4 credits = 9 hours
5 credits = 11 hours
6 credits = 13 hours

COURSE CONTENT:
Course content, including approximate time to be spent in each area is dependent on the student's proposal of a specific project and approval by the instructor. The original project proposal will then be used as a guide for subsequent research and the final paper. The independent research project includes completion of a proposal, literary research, a budget, a resume, data collection and analysis, and a final report, and an oral presentation.

EVALUATION:
Students will be graded on all areas of their project upon completion of all course expectations to include a/n:

proposal (30%)
final report (40%)
oral presentation (30%)


INSTRUCTION:
Methods of instruction include individual tutoring, skill teaching of techniques and use of equipment and computer software, teaching methods of data collection and data analysis, monitoring the writing of all papers, and helping students in the preparation of their oral presentation.
