IRS Data Retrieval


If you have been selected for verification, you must verify the income you reported on you FAFSA. This can be done two ways and instructions are provided below. Option 1 (IRS Data Retrieval) is recommended because it is faster. By requesting Data Retrieval, you are giving permission to have your IRS data automatically transferred to your FAFSA. Not everyone, however, is eligible to request for Data Retrieval. If so, you may select Option 2 and request for a Tax Transcript to be mailed to you. If you recently filed your taxes, you may have to wait a period of time before you can request for Data Retrieval or a Tax Transcript (2 wks. if taxes filed electronically or 8 weeks if taxes filed by mail.

NOTE: If you did not file a federal tax return because you are not required to file, see the Verification Worksheet for further instructions.


Option 1 (IRS Data Retrieval)

1- Log on to your 2012-13 FAFSA application at www.fafsa.gov

2- Click on "Make a FAFSA Correction" and enter your PIN.

3- Click on the "Financial Information" Tab, update your answer to “Already Completed.”

4- Six options will appear, to help you decipher whether or not you will be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval.

NOTE: if you filed your taxes “recently” (see the circled explanation in the screen shot below), you may need to wait until the IRS Data Retrieval is available to you. Also, if you owe the IRS any payment of taxes, the IRS Data Retrieval will not be available to you until a few
weeks after your payment has been received by the IRS.


  • 4 a) If you are MARRIED and your filing status is “Married, Filing Separately” or “Head of Household,” if your marital status has changed since December 31, 2011, or if you filed an amended tax return (1040X), you will not be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Instead, you must submit a “Tax Return Transcript” (Option 2) to the Financial Aid Office. DO NOT DELAY! It may take the IRS several weeks to process your request!   • 4 b) If you filed a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return, please submit copies of those forms to the Financial Aid Office.
  • 4 c) If you can answer “None of the Above,” you should be able to complete the IRS Data Retrieval. Enter your FAFSA pin. You will be alerted that you are leaving the FAFSA on the Web. Click ok.


5-You should now be on the IRS website. Enter your filing status and address information and press submit. Note: This tool is very complex, and needs to match the address on your 1040 precisely! For instance, if on the address line of your 1040 you used the “St.” abbreviation, but typed the word “Street” into this website, the website cannot match you. Check your 1040 and try again.

6-Click on “Transfer My Tax Information into the FAFSA” and then click “Transfer Now.”



7- Continue to complete any blank fields on your FAFSA, but DO NOT change any value that was “Transferred from the IRS.” If you change any field that is labeled as such, you will be required to complete the IRS Data Retrieval Tool again.

8- Sign and Submit your FAFSA. You will know your FAFSA has been submitted successfully when you arrive at the Confirmation Page.


Option 2 (Request a Tax Transcript)

Request for Tax Transcript online:

1- Go to www.irs.gov

2- Click on ‘TOOLS”

3- Click on ‘Order A Transcript’

4- Read Steps 1, 2, 3, under Step 3 click on ‘Order a Transcript’

5- Enter the tax filer’s Social Security Number, date of birth, street address, and zip or postal code. Use the address currently on file with the IRS.

6- Click ‘Continue’


Request for Tax Transcript by phone:

1- Call 1-800-908-9946

2- Tax filers must follow prompts to enter their social security number and the numbers in their street address.

3- Select “Option 2” to request an IRS Tax Return Transcript and then enter the appropriate tax year.

4- If successfully completed tax filers can expect to receive a tax return transcript within 5-10 business days.

7- In the Type of Transcript field, select “Return Transcript” and in the Tax Year field select the appropriate tax year.


Please allow 2 weeks for your Transcript to be mailed to you. Make a copy of the transcript (all papers) and turn the copy into our office.




Please remember that communication from our office is sent to your UH portal.  Check your email on a regular basis.
