UH students at specific campuses, to ask about library and online resources, computer
assistance, and any other questions regarding academic research.

Online Research & Writing Guides
If you are unable to come into the library for instruction on how to find library and online
resources, here are two Web-based tutorials that will teach you effective search
strategies and skills. Also offered is a guide that can help you create a skillfully written paper.
- LILO: Learning Information Literacy Online
LILO is a tutorial developed by librarians and writing instructors from across the UH system that helps students develop college level research skills in six interactive modules: The Research Process, Understanding Your Assignment, Search Strategies, Searching, Evaluating Resources, and Using Resources. It includes an assignment calculator and a citation builder.

on the Internet
This highly acclaimed site from UC Berkeley, offers a tutorial on searching the web. There is an excellent
chart comparing the features of the major web search engines.

Purdue University Writing Lab's Writing Handouts
This helpful resource takes you completely through the writing process and includes solid information on how to develop
effective writing skills, types/genres of writing, writing research papers, sentence construction
and editing/proofreading strategies.
Evaluation of Resources
An important part of the research process is
evaluating the books, articles, websites, etc. to know if
they are valid sources. Unlike books and articles, which
must undergo a screening process to be published, websites
can be put on the Internet by anyone. The two sites listed
here help you develop Web literacy skills.
Citation
Guides
An essential part of any research paper
is the bibliography or reference list of resources. There
are several different citation styles; your instructor
will inform you of his/her preferred style. Listed are
links to overviews of the most common citation guides.
The Library has reference books on each style.

KCC Learning Center & Writing Lab
The Learning Center offers a variety of resources to help students succeed. These include tutoring by volunteer faculty, community and trained student tutors, writing and math/science labs, English as a Second Languge support services, and special workshops.
The Learning Center is located in Room 124 in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) building, adjacent to the Library. The appointment and general information phone number is 245-8346.
The Writing Lab
is the place to contact for help with your writing assigments. Located in the same
building as the Library, the Lab offers workshops, tutoring assistance in reading, writing, and grammar, and proofreading
services.
