Online Research & Writing Guides

If you are unable to come into the library for instruction on how to find library and online resources, here are two Web-based tutorials that will teach you effective search strategies and skills. Also offered is a guide that can help you create a skillfully written paper.
  • LILO: Learning Information Literacy Online
LILO is a tutorial developed by librarians and writing instructors from across the UH system that helps students develop college level research skills in six interactive modules: The Research Process, Understanding Your Assignment, Search Strategies, Searching, Evaluating Resources, and Using Resources. It includes an assignment calculator and a citation builder.

  • Finding Information on the Internet
This highly acclaimed site from UC Berkeley, offers a tutorial on searching the web. There is an excellent chart comparing the features of the major web search engines.

  • Purdue University Writing Lab's Writing Handouts
This helpful resource takes you completely through the writing process and includes solid information on how to develop effective writing skills, types/genres of writing, writing research papers, sentence construction and editing/proofreading strategies.

Evaluation of Resources

An important part of the research process is evaluating the books, articles, websites, etc. to know if they are valid sources. Unlike books and articles, which must undergo a screening process to be published, websites can be put on the Internet by anyone. The two sites listed here help you develop Web literacy skills.

Citation Guides

An essential part of any research paper is the bibliography or reference list of resources. There are several different citation styles; your instructor will inform you of his/her preferred style. Listed are links to overviews of the most common citation guides. The Library has reference books on each style.
