Kauai Community College Professional Massage Therapy Program
The Professional Massage Therapy Program at Kaua`i Community College is designed to prepare students for entry level employment as Massage Therapists and as an additional certification for health care professionals. Upon successful completion of the program, Kaua`i Community College will award students a Certificate of Competence in Professional Massage Therapy. Graduates will be eligible to take the Hawai`i State Board of Massage.
The two-semester integrated curriculum consists of credit and non-credit courses including classroom instruction and clinical application. Topics include Fundamentals of Therapeutic Massage which cover theory, ethics, proper massage procedure for both the therapist and client, record keeping, hygiene, technique for specific conditions, contraindications of massage for specific techniques, draping, assessment of client's condition and general plan, anatomy, physiology, structural kniesiology, Hawaii state law, rules, and regulations governing massage, business considerations/management, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.
Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of massage techniques that may include Energy Therapy, Seated Massage, Swedish, Shiatsu, Hawaiian Lomilomi, Reflexology, Sports, deep tissue, pregnancy, and hot and/or cold stone massage, and other techniques that will enhance a basic massage (hydro, aroma, etc.). Specific techniques will be announced in the course syllabus.
Prerequisite: Qualified for Eng 102 or "C" or higher in Eng 21. Complete COMPASS Reading Placement Test, call 245-8212 for a testing appointment.
KCC reserves the right to make changes to the schedule and to cancel the program due to insufficient enrollment.
