Career Ladder Nursing - Associate Degree Nursing Program Information
Admissions

Admissions Overview
Kauai Community Nursing Program admits 18 to 24 students each Fall semester. Each entrant must meet the following criteria:
· Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent
· Satisfactory completion of high school or college chemistry
· Competency in English and basic algebra
· Satisfactory placement test scores (Kauai Community College placement test, ACT or SAT)
· Satisfactory National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Exam scores
Admission into the nursing program is competitive. Kauai Community College selects for admissions those applicants who appear to be best qualified to benefit from and contribute to the educational environment of the college. For those who do not meet the admissions requirements noted above, an alternate admission route is available which involves a developmental tract of study. For information on this alternative route contact the nursing counselor, Sharon Chiba, at schiba@hawaii.edu.
All students are admitted into the nursing program on the basis of "first applied: first qualified". Students who meet the admission criteria first, are first admitted into the nursing program. This policy ensures that all students who meet entry criteria will be admitted in relation to when they began their pre-nursing educational preparation. It guards against the applicant being placed in a student pool where each year only the top performers are admitted and others left out. The following table illustrates available entry pathways.
Entry Pathways to Kauai CC Nursing Program – First Level
| Meets Entry Criteria |
Does Not Meet Entry Criteria |
a. Math ( algebra competency) b. Reading (12 grade level competency)

ß ADMISSION TO FIRST LEVEL ON A FIRST APPLIED FIRST QUALIFIED BASIS If 1 and 2 are met but not 3 then: A limited number of students who closely approach criteria may be admitted on a space available basis under individualized contracts and given additional academic support for 2 semesters. Students who after completion of the Developmental Study Program do not closely approach criteria cutoffs will be counseled into further developmental study or consideration of other career choices. |

Transfer Students
In general, prospective transfer students are considered for admission to the college according to the Kauai Community College open door policy. Credit for courses completed at other colleges and universities may be accepted toward meeting graduation requirements only if courses are substantially equivalent to offerings at the college. Transfer of credits for courses taken outside the U.H. System must be at a "C" or higher; transfer of credits taken within the U.H. System may be counted if they are a "D" or better. However, the nursing admission requirements differ from this general policy in that all grades counted towards graduation for nursing students must be completed with a "C" or higher grade.
