The Writing Lab

 

The Writing Lab, located in Tutoring Services(in the Learning Commons), helps students to refine as well as master college writing skills.  Services include tutoring, hand-outs, computer-assisted instruction, text materials, Internet resources, and a wide range of other supports to help students in all courses achieve writing success.  The Writing Lab also offers workshops on a variety of writing topics within the classrooms themselves, at faculty request.

Writing Tutors


Peer and volunteer faculty and community tutors help students with all phases of writing in a friendly, collaborative environment. 

 Tutors can help you discover how to:

  • Conquer the fear of the "blank white page"
  • Develop brainstorming, pre-writing, and quick outlining techniques
  • Write strong and effective thesis statements
  • Organize papers in logical ways
  • Stick to the topic and respond in a relevant way to the assignment
  • Understand writing as a process
  • Effectively draft, revise, edit, and proofread
  • "Decode" college texts and other readings and respond appropriately in writing
  • Understand the concepts of style, voice, purpose, and audience
  • Avoid plagiarism, evaluate and integrate sources, and use MLA and APA citation styles
  • Stop procrastinating
  • Succeed in Writing Intensive (WI) courses
Students can reserve half-hour or hour-long appointment times by signing in at the tutors' schedule sheet, posted on the bulletin board in Tutoring Services area (in the Learning Commons).  Walk-in services also may be offered, depending on tutor availability.  Please come prepared with a copy of the assignment and any notes or drafting that you've done so far.   Remember, also, to come as early as possible after you get the assignment, not 40 minutes before the paper's due.  The Writing Lab is not an emergency editing service; a tutor's job is to be an effective writing coach, not to write your paper for you!
