TLC Computer Use Policy

 
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
The Learning Center (TLC) at Kaua`i Community College is committed to providing comprehensive programs and services to meet the diverse needs of the student population. It offers academic support to the faculty and staff so that students may be served more effectively. The Center's primary goal is to facilitate student empowerment for academic success by structuring a learning environment that is conducive to successful learning, by providing a variety of learning opportunities, and by giving academic support to faculty, staff and administrators.

The staff oversees the operation of the Computer Resource Center (CRC). The policies and procedures outlined below apply to both The Learning Center and the Computer Resource Center. TLC and CRC are open to everyone in the college community. All users must follow the policies and procedures listed below.

Individual Responsibilities
Each computer user is expected to respect and value the rights of others. Files of personal information, including personally developed documents, should be treated as private. No one should look at, copy, alter, or destroy anyone else's personal files without explicit permission from the owner.

Harrassment
No user shall use the computers to intentionally annoy, harrass, terrify, intimidate, threaten, offend, or bother another person or persons by transmitting obscene language, pictures or other materials, or by conveying physical or mental threats.

Game Playing
Due to high demand of computer use for academic purposes, the computers shall not be used for competitive or recreationsl game playing.


Access to Facilities and Information
Access to Kauai Community College computers requires a computer account. A student's computer account may be opened at Computer Services office by presenting a current class registration receipt and a photo ID. Students computer accounts are good for one semester but may be renewed in a subsequent semester by following the same procedures mentioned above.

Sharing Access
Computer accounts and passwords are assigned to individual users and they should not be loaned to another person. Users are responsible for remembering their own accounts and passwords.


USING THE CENTER'S COMPUTERS

File Storage
Users should bring and use their own diskettes and/or their personal accounts (usually the "H" drives) on the hard disk to save their work. Do not try to save on the "C" drive or desktop as your data will be lost.

Unauthorized Access
Computer users may not configure software or hardware to gain unauthorized access to the Network and may not damage computer systems by using knowledge of loopholes in computer security system or by using any computer program or device.


VIOLATORS MAY BE DENIED
ACCESS TO THE CENTER.

COPYRIGHT
The Learning Center adheres to the United States Copyright Law (Title 17, United States Code) and subsequent revisions.
  1. Users must not use the computers to install, copy, duplicate and use in part or in whole any software in violation of the copyright holder's licensing terms.

Commercial or For Profit Work
The use of the Learning Center's and Computer Resource Center comptuers, software and services may not be used in connection with compensated outside work nor for the benefit of for profit agencies an businesses.

Monitoring
TLC staff reserves the right to monitor comptue ruse in The Learning Center and in the Computer Resource Center

SANCTIONS
TLC staff may seek to impose sanctions and punishments to anyone who violates these policies.

COMPUTER LABS USAGE PRIORITIES
Due to an increasing demand for access to the computers, usage priorities have been established to accomplish the specific missions of The Learning Center, the Computer Resource Center, other LRC labs and Kauai Community College.

    COMPUTER USE DURING AND AFTER PEAK HOURS (8:00 A.M. - 4 P.M.)

Priority 1:
Currently registered uh students attending classes and workshops scheduled in the computer labs.
Priority 2:
Currently registered students working on class assignments.
Priority 3:
Currently registered students working on computer skills, personal development, and educational exploration.
Priority 4:
Students doing non-profit work unrelated to Kaua`i Community College.

 

The above priorities are established with the understanding that lower priority users will vacate their work stations to higher priority users. The Learning Center staff will enforce this policy. Questions should be directed to the TLC staff. Violation of the Computer Use Policy may result in the revocation of the violator's computer account. SIGNING OFF
After using the computers, users must logout (or log off). Computers and monitors should not be IMPROPERLY turned off.
