Cooperative Education, Kauai Community College

Cooperative Education is a program that integrates classroom studies with work experience directly related to a student's academic field of study. Students earn one to three (1-3) college credits in this formal program.

The Co-op Office also provides students with internship opportunities. Internships are defined as short-term work experiences, which offer students an opportunity to learn about a career area. Internships, unlike cooperative education placements, do not have to be directly related to the student's field of study.

1.Who is eligible for Cooperative Education experiences? Full- or part-time student with a declared major, minimum GPA of 2.0 in field of study, completion of most required course work in the declared major.

2.How does Cooperative Education work? Co-op field experiences my be paid or volunteer, part-time or full-time directly related to their field of study. Students may register for 1 - 3 credit but must document the following:

• 75 hours of work experience per credit (normally 225 hours per semester)
• Satisfactory work evaluation by employer supervisor
• Satisfactory completion of a job oriented learning objective.

3.What does a Co-op employer/supervisor need to provide:

• Work experience related to student's field of interest
• Orientation to work site and assignments
• Mentoring for student's professional growth.
  
  Evaluation of student's work performance and verification of student's hours.
